Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

Unicef – Consultant

Unicef is an international organization that appeals to me because they help children living in the most dangerous situations around the world. According to United Nations Children’s Fund website, “Across more than 190 countries and territories, we do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive and fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence.” (n.d.) I like that Unicef is non-political and impartial. I would like to work for an organization that helps children in need. I like that the organization provides humanitarian needs to children that are in emergency situations, such as war. Defending the rights of children, I believe would be a fulfilling career.

A current job opportunity that interests me is as a Consultant that works in Angola. Angola is a country on the west coast of Southern Africa. The skills and experience that are needed to competently fulfill the role is a master’s degree in public policy, social policy, economics, management or a related development sector. This opportunity provides an individual the opportunity to advocate for children. A minimum of 8 years of specialized experience in public policy. The employer favors someone that has worked in the field of social protection. In addition, individual should be fluent in English and Portuguese. Also, working experience in Angola (minimum 5 years) is wanted.

Save the Children – Early Childhood Development Coach

Another international organization that appealed to me is Save the Children. Save the Children is an organization that works in over 100 countries. The organization provides protection for children and opportunities to learn. I like that the organization believes every child deserves an opportunity to live and learn. Save the Children helps children that are living in struggles of war and natural diseases. They help children that are refugees.

A job opportunity that interests me with Save the Children is Early Childhood Development Coach. The skills that are needed to competently fulfill this role is proven experience working with children that are infants to preschool aged. An individual needs experience as a supervisor and/or trainer. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 2 years of experience is needed. An individual needs to be able to develop reliable, steady, and helpful relationships with young children. In addition, be able to demonstrate experience with developmentally suitable practices, child safeguarding and methods for communicating effectively with young children, as well as parents and other staff. Another skill that is needed is the ability to demonstrate a pledge to fostering an atmosphere of diversity, inclusion, and belonging for children and families. This job opportunity takes place in North Carolina; therefore, a Birth-Kindergarten (B-K) Licensure is preferred.

At least three international organizations or communities of practice that appealed to you and why you chose the

UNESCO-Project Officer

The final international organization that appealed to me that I chose was UNESCO. UNESCO is an agency of the United Nations that encourages the exchange of information, ideas, and culture. I believe I would enjoy working for an organization that participates in the exchange of information. I would enjoy working for a multinational non-profit organization and meeting people from around the world. I like that the organization has a department that focuses on the preservation cultural heritage.

A job opportunity that interests me is as a Project Officer (culture). There are several skills and experiences that are needed to competently fulfill this role. To fulfill this role an individual should have outstanding organizational, planning, and multi-tasking skills, with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines. Also, have financial management skills and have Results-Based Management principles. In addition, be able to develop and maintain networks. As with most organizations, be able to work in a team and to maintain effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. The purpose of a Project Officer is to “Contribute to the overall coordination of the Culture Sector’s preparedness and response to emergencies, at policy and operation levels, including: the organization of dedicated coordination mechanisms, the management of their agenda and the follow-up of agreed decisions with the concerned UNESCO staff and external partners”. I cannot begin to understand the details of the position, but I believe any position that would allow me to help persevere culture would be rewarding.

  1. The internationally organizations you chose does a lot to bring a positive change for children and families around the world. The Early Childhood Development Coach at Save the Children is intriguing to me as well. I value the word "coach" in the position. Positive things can come out of being a coach. I appreciate the focus being on developing healthy relationships with young children and communicating effectively with families, children and colleagues. Although, I do not have experience working with a nonprofit organization some of the same skills are needed in my current career.

  2. You founds some great organizations to share about that are all doing wonderful work internationally for children. I really enjoyed learning more about UNESCO, as that was one I had never heard about before this. It sounds like they do a lot of meaningful work while trying to help preserve cultural heritage which is so important. I enjoyed reading about all three of the positions that you shared about, but the Save the Children Early Childhood Development Coach really spoke to me. I think the part of this job that really excited me was when it talked about how a big part of this role is "working to develop reliable, steady, and helpful relationships with young children" because that is something that I am passionate already and I strive to do in my daily work and life.

  3. I have not heard of UNESCO. What a wonderful organization. It promotes world peace through education, arts and science. I enjoyed reading about this organization. I can't believe the United States was a member but wants nothing to do with this organization since December 31st 2018. The website says that the organization had an anti-Israel bias. so the US opted out of its membership.

  4. Channette,
Save the Children is a great organization. Did you find any information on how they respond to the children in Ukraine?

  5. UNESCO is an organization I have never looked in to, but based on your description I may have to! I share the same interest in the exchange of information and multicultural environments.
Learning from different cultures expands our practices and cultural competencies.
