My Connections to Play

My Connections to Play

My family supported play for me when I was younger by purchasing Barbie's and Cabbage dolls. I know that my Cabbage Patch dolls were especially important to me because I still have them all. I cannot seem to let go of them. I have around 10 Cabbage Patch dolls and accessories to go with them. I can remember always having one with me at all times. I am an only child and participated in solitary play often. I can recall spending hours in my room, using my imagination to go on long adventures with my Barbie's and Cabbage patch dolls. I believe it is one of the reasons why I am so creative. I have a great imagination. My family provided me the space and time to play. I do not recall playing with my family members. However, I do not believe I ever wanted to. I enjoyed being alone during my playtime. I can recall enjoying playing with my peers. I remember the excitement of gathering with my peers that had Barbie's and Barbie accessories. Playing provided me opportunities to practice my social skills. I would pretend to have the dolls interact with each other. In addition, playing with dolls increased my language.

I feel play today is different from the play in which I engaged as child. Now, children have more technology that they play with. When I was a child I was outside playing until the streetlights came on. I see less children outside playing with their friends. I hope that technology finds more ways to keep children physically active. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected outside play for children. I believe it is essential to continuing providing virtual physical play activities for children.

Playing played a significate role throughout my life. It allowed me to have friends and socialize with them. As an only child there were often times when playing allowed me to enjoyment. This course has reminded me of the important of having playtime as an adult. I now realize playing as an adult has mental benefits. It allows me to enjoy my life and not take it so seriously. It essential that as an adult I make time to play.

  1. One of my favorite and most memorable toys growing up was also my cabbage patch kids! I used to do their hair all day long and I brought my one doll (Sara) everywhere I went!! I saved quite a few and now my 3 year daughter loves to play with them and do their hair as well!!

  2. I used the same quote from Albert Einstein on my blog post. I thought it was so special and meaningful. I also empathize with the streetlights, a fond memory and connection :) Thanks for your post!
