My Support - EDUC 6161
My Support
I
like to believe that I am a fairly independent person. As an only child and a
child of a single parent, I strived to do things on my own. I felt a since of
pride by being able to accomplish things on my own. However, I am aware that I
am only human and must rely on others and objects for support when I need it. In
my daily environment there are factors that I find supportive. In my daily
environment I have two people that are supportive to me and one object that I rely
on to get through my work week.
My
mother is main source of support. Daily I video chat with my mother. I
currently live in Italy and she lives in Virginia. She provides me support by listening
to me describe how things are going for me. She listens and provides advice to me
on how to deal with complications that occur in my life. In addition, she makes
me laugh and reminds that God has a plan for me. There are countless benefits
to the relationship that I have with my mother. She is reliable, honest, and loving.
Her love is unconditional, and I appreciate her about anyone else. Her support
allows me to be productive and efficient with my life. The effort she makes to
stay in communication with me while I am overseas provides me the support, I
need to not be extremely homesick. Her support gets me through my day. The
thought of not having my mother is the most terrifying thought. Not having my mother’s
support in my life would be exceedingly difficult. However, I am aware that
someday she will no longer be with me. Therefore, everyday I appreciate having
her and I show that I love her.
My
Regional Director is a source of support for me. He provides me the reassurance
that I am doing well at my job, that I sometimes need to. I appreciate that he
takes the time to provide me with feedback and educate me on the skills I need
to be successful with my career. A benefit of having my Regional Director as my
support is that I have him as a mentor. I know that he will assist me in any way
he can to build my career. It would be difficult to exist at my job without his
support. Nobody likes to work for someone that does not encourage and believe
in them. I believe people like to feel supportive by their employer. If I did
not have him in my life, I honestly believe my job would be more difficult. I
would not have a solid resource to go to for advice. Instead of being able to
ask one person for advice I would need to ask several people.
I
rely on the calendar on my computer to support me everyday I am at work. I put
everything that I must do into the calendar. I hate to imagine what would
happen if the computer stopped operating or erased my calendar. My calendar
supports me by reminding me what I need to do for the day. In addition, I have
a journal that I always carry with me and write in. The journal coincides with
the calendar. If I lost either, I would have a difficult day at work. If I did
not keep a journal or place my appointment in my calendar, I would be lost at
work. I would arrive every day at work searching through emails trying to
remember what I needed to do for the day.
A challenge that I may
need to face one day is getting old enough to retire. One day I do hope to retire
from my current employer. However, I do not know what I will do after I retire.
I think to myself will I volunteer somewhere or will I travel the world. I am
not married, and I have no children. I wonder will I end up alone in a retirement
home. As I get older, I wonder if I will need the support of nurses, doctors,
family members, pills, medical equipment, or friends. As I get older, I want people
in my life that are supportive and care about my existence. If I lived in a
retirement community having someone to help me with daily chores could be
supportive. As I get older, I might need someone to remind of the daily things
I must do. However, by time I get older there might be a robot that can do it.
I believe I will always need socialization as a form of support. Therefore,
living in a retirement community would help me to be able to socialize with others
my age. As most people, I do not want to die alone. Having the comfort of
friends or a relationship with a significant other would allow me to have a
more pleasurable life. Just as when I was a child, I needed the support of
adults to have a pleasurable childhood, I will need people in my life to enjoy my
later years of life.
I am most of the teachers support system at work, I wish I had more support myself. I also need my computer and calendar to survive every day at work. :) I do have a husband and a child on the way but I frequently thing about what will happen when I am retired. Will my child want to take care of me? Should my husband and I put start putting money away for a retirement home. I'm not sure what is best. I hope to die before him so I never have to worry about being along. I know that's probably not a good thing to thing about but, I can't help it.
ReplyDeleteHow do u cope without being near your mother? I moved 3 hours away from my mother and I moved back after a year. I was completely lost without her lol.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great support system, and there's nothing like having parents, and other forms of support when needed. I wish I had a support system at work, someone to talk to and lean on when it comes to work related issues, but unfortunately I don't so I make the best of it. I've enjoyed reading.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! Your comment about your time with your mother being limited reminds me of a quote I heard a few years ago that I remember daily: Every day is a holiday and every meal is a feast. The purpose of this quote is to remind the listener that every moment is precious. Although the time we have with our parents and loved ones is limited, every moment with them is so incredibly precious.
