Blog Assignment: Sharing Web Resources- Week 6

The website that I have chosen to explore throughout this course is Savethechildren.org. There are several links throughout the website. The link that I have chosen to explore this week of the course are the links associated with the donate subpage. These links lead to information regarding the finances of Save the Children. On the donate subpage there are links to Forbes, Charity Watch and Great Nonprofits. Forbes provides financial information from the top charities in the United States. According to Forbes, Save the Children organization received “$424 million” in private donations in 2019 and a total revenue of $864 million”. Charity Watch is an organization that looks out for donors of a charity. It reports any abuse of funds and keeps an out on an organization. The organization conducts in depth analysis of the financial records of nonprofit organizations, such as Save the Children. They provide the organizations with a grade rating. The most recent rating the organization provided for Save the Children was A-. The Great Nonprofits website rated Save the Children as 2019 top rated nonprofit. Great Nonprofits is an award presented to nonprofits, but the votes come from volunteers, donors and individuals that are associated with nonprofits. I like that this organizations website provides reviews from individuals regarding their experience with Save the Children organization.

I do not receive an e-newsletter, but I did find an interesting article on the affects of Covid-19. In this article it discusses how Covid-19 is preventing children from having access to an education. Prior to Covid-19, cost and location where the main factors when considering why a child could not have access to an early childhood education. Covid-19 placed many restrictions on the accessibility of an education on children. During the pandemic millions of children did not have access to virtual learning. These children will experience setbacks in their education. According to Protect the Children: The Impact of Covid-19 on children’s lives, “More than 1.6 billion learners globally have faced school closures due to the pandemic. Save the Children predicts that the unprecedented disruption to children’s education will result in at least 10 million children not returning to school, with girls and the most marginalized and deprived children most affected.” (Save the Children, 2021). I believe the world has yet to see the global education affects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The article that I found on the website added to my understanding of equity and excellence in early care and education. Often when I consider equity and excellence in regard to early care and education, I only consider what I have seen in the United States. However, there accessibility of early care and education is a world issue. Save the Children in an international organization and I like how the organization brings attention to issues that are affecting children around the world.

One of the issues this week in the course is accessibility. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for some countries to provide educational opportunities to children during the pandemic. The Save the Children organization has made me realize there are millions of children who did not receive a proper educational opportunity during the pandemic. I wonder how this will affect them as adults. I wonder what the generational educational effects of the pandemic are. The pandemic affected developing countries and poor countries. I believe the pandemic will cause there to be a greater gap in education between developing countries and poor countries.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I will definitely utilize this website before I place a donation to an organization. It sounds like Charity Watch does a great job at providing information, and I appreciate the dog on their logo. I'm obsessed with dogs of all breeds and backgrounds.
Like you, I also wonder how the pandemic will have a long-term effect on education. Are there any assumptions you have about the long-term effects this past year had on children's academic comprehension?
