Getting to Know International Organizations: Part 1

Image
Poverty is affecting the lives of children all over the world. There are many organizations that are helping and advocating for children that live in poverty. One of the organizations is United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The original name of the organization was United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The organization was created in 1946 but changed the name in 1953. The organization was created by United Nations. The organization supports the efforts of nations to improve the well-being, education, nourishment, and general welfare of children around the world. The UNICEF website offers information about the efforts the organization makes to improve the lives of children. The website provides information on the affects of poverty in many different countries. In addition, the website provides those individuals that would like to help with volunteer and donation opportunities. Current stories of po...

Blog Assignment: Sharing Web Resources     The name of the organization that I choose related to early childhood education is Save The Children. The website link for Save The Children is https://savethechildren.org. The organization's focus is on providing children worldwide with a healthiness, education, and safety. I like that the organization's purpose is to reach as many children as possible around the world. The organization also focuses on collecting donations to fund efforts to help children all over the world.                One current issue from the website that caught my attention was Save the Children Statement on Cease fire Announced in Gaza and Israel. This article caught my attention because I have seen a lot of discussions and pictures about the topic on social media and the news. In addition, a dear friend of mine is Palestinian, and I wanted to know if any information in the article would be of int...

Getting Ready—Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

Image
Getting Ready—Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources   One of the reasons why I wanted to pursue my master’s in early childhood studies was to have the opportunity to learn more about children and the resources available to them. I always wanted to become more aware of issues that are affecting children around the world. I believe it is important to not just focus on the issues that are occurring within my facility, but to be aware of all the issues that could be affecting children. The early childhood organization website that I have chosen to explore more is Save the Children. I have chosen to explore this organization, because it is one that I have heard of since I was child. However, I do not know a lot about the organization. I only know what I have seen from the commercials I saw growing up. According to Save the Children, “We know the world’s children deserve better. As the world’s leading expert on childhood, we have the expertise and the global presence to...

My Support - EDUC 6161

Image
My Support I like to believe that I am a fairly independent person. As an only child and a child of a single parent, I strived to do things on my own. I felt a since of pride by being able to accomplish things on my own. However, I am aware that I am only human and must rely on others and objects for support when I need it. In my daily environment there are factors that I find supportive. In my daily environment I have two people that are supportive to me and one object that I rely on to get through my work week. My mother is main source of support. Daily I video chat with my mother. I currently live in Italy and she lives in Virginia. She provides me support by listening to me describe how things are going for me. She listens and provides advice to me on how to deal with complications that occur in my life. In addition, she makes me laugh and reminds that God has a plan for me. There are countless benefits to the relationship that I have with my mother. She is reliable, hone...

My Connections to Play

Image
My Connections to Play                                           My family supported play for me when I was younger by purchasing Barbie's and Cabbage dolls. I know that my Cabbage Patch dolls were especially important to me because I still have them all. I cannot seem to let go of them. I have around 10 Cabbage Patch dolls and accessories to go with them. I can remember always having one with me at all times. I am an only child and participated in solitary play often. I can recall spending hours in my room, using my imagination to go on long adventures with my Barbie's and Cabbage patch dolls. I believe it is one of the reasons why I am so creative. I have a great imagination. My family provided me the space and time to play. I do not recall playing with my family members. However, I do not believe I ever wanted to. I enjoyed being alone during my playtime. I can reca...

Relationship Reflection - Week 2 EDUC 6161

Image
Relationship Reflection Relationships are important to me because a support system of positive people in my life helps me to stay positive and focused. I honestly believe if I did not have positive people in my life, I would have made a lot of bad decisions or decisions that took me away from my passions and dreams. Having a solid foundation of kind and influential people in my life has saved my life many times.  I only focus on partnerships in life that are positive. I have no time for negative people or negative influences in my life. However, I am aware that people come into my life for a reason, season, or a lifetime. There are several people in my life whom I believe will be a part of my life for a lifetime. From the first moment I met these individuals, I have had a positive relationship with them. I have a special connection with each one of them for valid reasons.  Dana is a friend of mine who I connect with on a spiritual level. She helps me to continue to have faith ...

Testing for Intelligence?

Image
I believe that children’s intelligence and achievements should be measured. According to, The developing person through childhood, “People assumed that, for intelligence, one general aptitude (often referred to as g, for general intelligence) could be assessed by answers to a series of questions testing vocabulary, memory, puzzle completion and so on. “(Berger, 2018). I believe it is vital to measure a child’s intelligence to better understand what can be expected from a child. However, when doing so it is important to remember that children differ in their skills and talents. One c...

Elizabeth's Stressor & Poverty & Children in Sicily, Italy

Image
Elizabeth's Stressor   Growing up in Los Angeles, California as a child my friend, Elizbeth, experienced the stressor of poverty. Growing up it was her, her brother, and her mother. Unfortunately, her father was never around. Therefore, the financial obligations were solely her mother’s responsibility. However, this was difficult for her mother for several reasons. Her mother had heart disease and was an immigrant. Although, her mother was a legal citizen of the United States she was a very prideful. Her mother never wanted to contribute to the stereotype of being an immigrant that wanted a handout from the government. Her mother had a hard time covering all the bills. The di...

Nutrition - Child Development and Public Health

Image
Nutrition For as far back as I can remember I have been overweight. Therefore, teaching children about proper nutrition is important to me. I do not want children to have to experience the struggles I went through due to my own obesity. It is essential that as a caregiver I teach children how to make proper healthy eating choices and be a good example. I appreciate that at the facility I work at children that want to bring their own food must only bring food that meets the same nutritional standards of our facility. I can recall one time a parent sent their child to our facility with a giant bag of Doritos potato chips, soda and a Lunchable. We immediately contacted that parent and reminded them of our nutritional standards. According to the journal article, Nutrition knowledge and other determinants of food intake and lifestyle habits in children and young adolescents living in a rural area of Sicily, South Italy, “Improving nutrition knowledge in children and young adolesce...

Childbirth In Your Life and Around the World

Image
I've been working with youth for about 20 years. I definitely thought by now I would have my own children. However, I do not have my own children. The above picture is of a new born baby. I do not believe I will ever have the pleasure of experiencing a  personal birthing experience for a child of my own. I cannot recall my own birthing experience. However, I do know that I was born at 6:30 pm, weighing 6 pounds and 5 ounces. I have never witnessed a child birth. I have visited several friends in the hospital after the birth of their children. I can recall a feeling of excitement for the child's arrival. Thankfully, none of my friends experienced complications during delivery. The birth of my friends children was a long time ago, 20 plus year. Therefore, I cannot recall a lot from those moments. However, I do remember when my god son, Michael, was born a sense of responsibility for him came over me. He was the first child born to a friend of mine. I have a...

Words of Inspiration and Motivation - Week 7

According to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment "To share resources with  co workers,  collaborating  to ensure that the best possible early childhood care and  education program is provided." This statement is significant to my professional life because in order to provide the youth in my care with the most opportunities available to them I must collaborate with my colleagues. There have been many times I was not aware that something was occurring for the youth in my care. I depend on my colleagues to share information with me. In addition, I share information with them. There is always something new and exciting that could be potential used to provide better care and education to our program. For example, when I first began working with teens I was not aware that every October there is a College Night held at the local convention center. I only became aware, because a co-worker provided that information to me. I am very thankful for the c...
